Welcome to the Island Dance Telegraph. Here I will try to shed some light on questions and topics that dance students and dance parents routinely ask. As a dance mom, I have 30 years experience; competition dance mom - 25 years experience. I do not claim to know all.....what I do know I will share here and what I do not know, I will research, gather the information and report it here. So what shall our first topic discussion be?

Why do I have to take Ballet?

This happens to be a very good question and one I and the other instructors hear almost daily. BALLET IS THE CORE OF ALL DANCE GENRES whether we like it or not! And it should be the core of all athletic activities. Our ballet director uses many fun and inventive techniques to enhance the proper body alignment and placement to help students build their skill levels. No matter what form of dance you decide to train, that genre of dance will most definitely contain many aspects of ballet technique and skills. Yes, even Hip Hop class! You may not be aware that you are in a deep pile' while making those moves with that upper body. What you learn in Ballet class will help you increase the flexibility of your leg muscles, learn how to control those muscles, increase your stamina and endurance so you don't fatigue easily and teach you how to "tighten your core". The more a ballet student studies ballet, the more that student progresses, excels and flourishes in every other style of dance.

It is important to realize that even if you hate ballet, it is probably a good idea to try to learn to love it. After all, technique for other styles of dance is mastered in ballet. Often times we see dancers at competitions, who are very young, attempting to do extremely difficult skills and/or "tricks" before they even have learned how to do a proper pile'. It takes years of ballet training to obtain the strength, technique and control that is required to perform such skills. This clearly proves that without ballet, a dancer will not be able to acquire the proper technique needed to perform difficult skills safely and properly. Also, the more ballet that a dancer takes will only help them maintain and improve their overall technique, coordination, musicality and body awareness.

Many dancers feel that they do not want to do ballet because they don't like the structure and it isn't "fun"! However, that is simply not true! Ballet is challenging, yes, and that is what makes it fun, the challenge. In ballet, a dancer's competition is themselves. They come to class and strive to be better than they were yesterday, never better than the dancer next to them. Ballet is linear; emphasizing form, extension and lightness in the body, which comes in handy for jazz, modern, contemporary, tap and hip hop. This might come to a surprise to many people who do hip hop and tap because they feel that the structure of ballet doesn't allow the dancer to relax. That is very false because knowing the opposing techniques as a dancer gives one more knowledge of their body and movement quality, all in all makes that dancer more versatile.

So, what's stopping you from joining that ballet class! All ages, can enjoy a ballet class with a qualified instructor.
